. When Larry Sultan looked at videos he wanted to change the videos and manipulate them to be a different perspective of our own.
. Larry Sultan saw his family life as very complicated mainly due to the fact that his dad did not want him to become an artist.
. Larry Sultan's photography reveals the mystical snapshots that he was trying to go for when taking his photographs.
. Photography can also relate to performance as you can make images look how you want them to look and the photographs are normally staged into different aspects when people make them. Combining these aspects can make a performance relating to photography.
. Threshold concepts 4, 9 and 10 may also come into place for Larry Sultan's photography. These concepts show us that photography is an art of selection rather than invention, they are not neutral and susceptible to the abuse of power and they warp our sense of time; reminding us of things lost. I chose these threshold concepts as they link heavily to photographs from home and Larry Sultan's type of photography and they can also symbolise that photographs may have many hidden meanings behind them that we may never know the true story of the photograph.

In this photograph the preliminary observations I can make are that there are an old couple living together as part of a family in a decorated house with coloured white and yellow walls that have different paintings on them at a variety of places within the wall. Some secondary observations I can make are that there are two different plant pots with one filled with flowers and another filled with a tall plant. Finally, I can see a table with what may be valuable items to the family. This photo could showcase some hidden meanings within the photograph as there are many valuable products in the photo symbolising that the family may be rich. This could also be showcased through the photography threshold concept that photography is not neutral and is susceptible to the abuse of power meaning that there may be something hidden behind this photograph that we may never know. There are many different aesthetics within this photograph. There are a variety of bright colours at the wall and the lighting of the room is also very bright. The left side of the photograph also has bright colours. This photograph gives me a feeling of positivity as many successful things may have happened in their lives to have potentially made them rich. The photograph also gives me a feeling of suspense as there may be a hidden meaning behind it that nobody knows about.
These photographs represent the Postcards from Home theme in photography. I have done this by taking 30 photographs of different objects at different locations in my house. I have influenced the use of different types of objects, the different colours of the objects and the shadows the objects may reflect. To do this I used different levels of lighting with some photographs featuring higher levels of lights and others featuring lower levels of light which may affect the different level of shadows and how I may have taken the photographs. What went well with these photographs for me was that I was able to utilise the lighting and the objects of my photographs very well so all the photographs had some detail to a certain extent. However, this could have been better if I framed the photographs a bit better and thought more about the composition of the objects and the photograph itself.
The preliminary observations I can make from this photograph are that there is what looks to be a living room featuring aesthetics such as a sofa, a painting, flowers, a camera photographing the wall and a shadow of a figure. Some secondary observations I can make from this photograph are that there are also windows with blinds on them and there is someone who looks to be sleeping on another sofa in the corner of the room. There are many different colours used in the photograph as there is a blue wall with a painting in the centre of the wall. However, on the right of the wall there is a shadow of a figure which we do not know who it may be or why it is there. There are two batches of red flowers with two yellow sofas in the room with one being on the left and the other being on the right with someone lying down on it. Finally, there is a black camera with a screen showing a potential photograph of the wall. The main focus of this photograph is to represent how a living room may look in a studio and symbolise how different aspects of a good living room may look. This photograph is a representation of Larry Sultan's 'Pictures from Home' series which may have been taken in a studio representation of a living room to symbolise what a real living room may look like containing a variety of different features. To this day the photograph still plays a significant effect on the topic of 'Pictures from Home' and it shows a very truthful depiction of the subject itself as it shows a very realistic representation of how a real living room may look like. However, questions may be raised about why there is a shadow reflecting on the wall and who's shadow could it be. This confirms my knowledge of 'Pictures from Home as the living room itself is very aesthetic and has been framed very well by Larry Sultan which can also show a high level of reliability if it were to be used as historical evidence to show us how a representation of 'Pictures from Home' could be taken.
Delfina Carmona
Delfina Carmona is an Argentinian photographer and art director who bases her work in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Her work is mainly based on using everyday objects to create shadows to symbolise specific every day tasks. Her inspirations involve music, light, cinema and colour which links to her personal style of neutral colours with splashes of colour. In this photograph the preliminary observations I can make are that there are many different shady glass objects which include wine bottles and glasses with different reflections involved within those objects. Some secondary observations I could make from these photographs are that most of the wine bottles have been reflected off the wall to create a variety of shadows. Another feature could be that one of the wine glasses have a card in them that may also provide detail to the shadow. Finally, the main detail is the main shadow on the wall containing what looks to be a human arm with other different features contained within the shadow. This photograph is a representation of the 'Pictures from Home' topic in Delfina Carmona's style taken inside what may be a representation of a bedroom in a household. This photograph shows a very truthful depiction of 'Pictures from Home' as it shows high levels of detail in the specific room which symbolises that the photograph has also achieved the purpose of 'Pictures from Home' as there is still a huge effect of this photograph to this day on this specific topic because of how well framed and detailed the photograph was and how well it accurately represents a real life bedroom. This confirms my knowledge as the photograph symbolises many different shadows and light reflections highlighting how Delfina Carmona represents her work. Finally, I believe that this photograph is relevant for historical knowledge as it has a representation of being one of the many significant photographs from the topic of 'Pictures from Home.'
For these photographs I had to take pictures of different moments containing a variety of family members. In these photographs I was aiming to showcase what my family have with each other and how they also are on day to day occasions. My work was mainly inspired by Larry Sultan as he also captured many family moments within his photographs with some containing hidden meanings bringing more life and suspense to the photograph. The main kind of photographs I enjoy taking may include landscape photography and photographs in low light conditions as I feel like I can capture many different beautiful aesthetics within those kind of photographs. I believe that my favourite photograph is the 3rd photo on the 2nd row as I had gone to visit my granddad for his 89th birthday and it was a great family moment for my whole family who came along. Although these photographs have been very useful and pleasing, I do not have any other ideas to take a series of photographs using family moments.
Olivia Arthur
In Olivia Arthur's photography she mainly frames different family moments particularly using black and white filters. She frames this to capture her family life and show how she may feel and what she enjoys doing while she is at home. This may be useful as it represents the 'Postcards from Home' topic very thoroughly and could showcase what her feeling in her mind of being at home may feel like. Olivia Arthur has utilised her photography with black and white filters which highlights many different uses of shadows and light. She utilises the light in one aspect of the photograph to highlight one main part of the photograph to have a lot more light than the other aspects of the photograph. By doing this the light will be clearer in the photograph whilst also showcasing darker areas in other aspects of the photograph whilst also symbolising shadows as well. Olivia Arthur's images have a very simple style as she mainly just captures her family life with light and shadows. However, the meaning of her photographs may go a lot deeper as it showcases her feelings of home symbolising the different emotions of the photograph. Finally, the subject matter within the images is mainly showcasing Olivia Arthur's family life but it may also represent low light, shadows and reflections.
For these photographs I had to take different photographs of shadows and silhouettes. In these photographs I was aiming to showcase the different kinds of shadows and silhouettes that can be made with different objects to create a variety of sophisticated or fragmented photographs. My work was mainly inspired by Olivia Arthur as her style of photography was mainly based on capturing shadows and silhouettes to showcase different moments that may have occurred in her life. To do this I gathered a variety of objects and filtered them in different locations to capture the different potential shadows and silhouettes. What went well with these images was that there was a wide variety of different shadows and silhouettes showcasing different objects and different sophisticated or fragmented outcomes. However, these photographs could have been better if there was a wider variety of locations used for the shadows and silhouettes.
For these photographs I picked out a selection of my favourite images for shadows and silhouettes that I took. The reason why I chose these pictures is because they are very sophisticated and have a variety of different shadows and silhouettes to represent not only high quality photographs but some potential fragmented photographs as well.
Even though there were 36 different photographs I took of shadows and silhouettes. There was one photograph that stood out among the others. I believe that this was the best photograph because there are many different observations that can be made about it for starters alongside many other potential reasons. The preliminary observations that can be made about this photograph are that there is a wide variety of different shadows in the photograph which have been used from different objects, this was also taken in darker light in the background with some brighter lights in the foreground which can then represent a highly sophisticated level of different shadows whilst also potentially bringing a more fragmented outlook of the shadows and silhouettes to the outcome of the photograph.
Exhibition Planning
Exhibition Photographs
I have chosen these selection of images for my photography exhibition as they represent not only lots of different aesthetics and high quality photographs but they also represent different hidden meanings and memories within the photographs. To edit these photographs I am going to use different software such as Photoshop and Lightroom to upscale the photographs and present them in an even higher quality and present them to the best of their ability whilst also making diptychs and triptychs of these photographs sequencing photographs that work well together in many different varieties to symbolise lots more potential different photographs. I believe these photographs fit with what my intentions are as I plan to edit some of them into higher quality and more aesthetic photographs whilst also creating diptychs of different photographs to present many different meanings of similar and contrasting photographs.
How I found help with sequencing
For my photography exhibition I found help on how to use sequencing with photographs by photographing and scanning different images from a photobook called 'Inheritance' by Andrea Tese. This photobook contains different pictures from a home environment in different areas of home such as a living room, kitchen, garden and even areas such as a basement and an attic. These photographs may have been taken to represent Tese's life and feelings of what home may feel like to her and she may also want to showcase different aspects of her home to also symbolise potential meanings behind certain images.
Reduction to 12 Image Exhibition
For my photography exhibition I decided to reduce the amount of pictures I had to 12 photographs. The reason I have decided to do this is because not only are these the highest quality photographs that I have taken during my ''Postcards From Home'' project but they are also the photographs that create the best diptychs and have corresponding relations to some other photographs with some having meanings behind them. The family pictures may have relations to one another as some represent similar meanings and provide an insight into different family moments whilst the shadows, still life and mirror pictures may also create high quality diptychs due to how different reflections and shadows are represented and also because of the lighting of the different photographs. What I like about these photographs are the different variety of how many different photographs relate with each other to create a wide variety of different diptychs and these photographs also represent hidden meanings behind some of the family pictures. These photographs show a truthful depiction of the subject of Postcards From Home as they have a representation of many different elements of photographs being utilised in different housing spaces. What I believe went well with the photographs was that they all had highly aesthetical and high quality which showcased that the pictures had many different features that may have been useful to prove how sophisticated different housing elements could be for these specific pictures. However, I believe that these photographs could have been better if there was a wider variety of shadows and silhouettes for the photographs I took as they would have provided more detail of different objects being used to create even better shadows.
